NOTE: the 2024 agreement is still under negotiation so, from January 1 it is not possible to publish Open Access with the coverage of the agreement.

The University of Bologna has joined the national CARE-CRUI agreement signed with Wiley. The transformative agreement covers both the subscription fees for accessing the Database collection subscribed by the University of Bologna and the fees for publishing Open Access in the hybrid journals included in the same collection, as well as in all hybrid journals that will be converted to Open Access during the term of the agreement. Therefore, authors can publish Open Access at no additional costs.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Which authors may be eligible?

Only corresponding authors already affiliated with the University of Bologna on the date the article is accepted are eligible, including academics with fixed-term contracts such as PhD students, research fellows, fixed-term assistant professorsspecialisation school students, etc.

In such cases, authors must submit their contributions via their institutional email address (i.e.: name.surname@unibo.it or name.surname@studio.unibo.it).

If the article has more than one corresponding author, the eligible author - defined as "responsible corresponding author" by Wiley - is the one who keeps directly in contact with the publisher and takes care of the whole submission and publishing process.

Which are the eligible journals?

In the hybrid journals included in the Database collection subscribed by the University of Bologna, as well as in the hybrid journals that will be converted to full Open Access during the term of the contract, accessible on the Wiley Online Library.

Journals that were already full Open Access when the agreement was signed are not included; in this case, the publishing costs are charged to the authors.

Here is the list of the hybrid eligible journals in 2023.

Here is the 2023 list [.xlsx 12 KB] of the eligible journals that have become full Open Access.

How does the publishing process for full Open Access journals work?

Unlike what happens for hybrid journals, when publishing in full Open Access journals the recognition of the agreement between the CARE-CRUI consortium and Wiley takes place during the submission phase, that is before the article is accepted by the publisher.

Once the journal has been selected, the author will not receive any information about the eligibility of the journal. The list of the eligible journals is published on this page (see the previous FAQ).

In the case of submission via ScholarOne, authors must select option 2: "The Corresponding Author will pay directly or will arrange payment (request an invoice) for the Article Publication Charge".

In the case of submission via Wiley/ReX, authors must select the option: "Open Access Discount - No institutional or country discounts apply".

In both cases, authors will receive a summary email with the Article Processing Charges (APC) that should be ignored: once the Approval Manager has given their approval and the article has been accepted by the publisher, the publication fees will be automatically covered by the contract.

Author eligibility is assessed by the Approval Manager at the time of approval.

Here you can find a guide, provided by the publisher, with all the indications for authors who publish in full Open Access journals.

What happens if the annual national fund is exhausted?

The agreement covers the Open Access publication of a limited number of articles.

Once the national fund is exhausted, the costs for publishing new articles will be charged to their authors, with a 20% discount on the list price.

In case the annual fund is exhausted, the publisher inhibits on its platform the possibility of requesting the coverage of the Open Access publishing costs through the transformative agreement, no longer showing the University of Bologna in the list of institutions that have an agreement of this type.

At the beginning of the following year, the new annual coverage will be activated and authors will be able to publish again in Open Access, benefitting from the agreement cost coverage; the new annual fund, however, can be used only for the articles accepted in the year to which the fund refers: articles accepted during the previous year can't be published in Open Access with the new coverage.

Under which kind of licence will articles be published?

The standard licence is CC BY. However, authors may also opt for one of the other Creative Commons licences allowed by the journal on which the publication takes place.

Authors retain all rights relating to their articles, which may be deposited in the University of Bologna institutional repository (IRIS) and published on the authors’ personal websites. Open Access is granted right after the publication without any embargo period.

When will the article be published Open Access?

The article will be published once the University of Bologna has verified the author's affiliation with the University and has given its approval.

Which costs are excluded from the coverage of the agreement?

Any other publication fees (i.e.: submission fees, color pages, overlength pages fees etc.) are not covered by the agreement.
