NOTE: the 2024 agreement is still under negotiation, but it is already possible to publish Open Access with the coverage of the agreement.

The University has joined the national CARE-CRUI agreement signed with Wolters Kluwer for the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins journals. The transformative agreement covers both the subscription fees for accessing the journals included in the collection subscribed by the University of Bologna and the fees for publishing Open Access in the hybrid journals subscribed by all the institutions that signed the national agreement. Therefore, authors can publish open access at no additional costs.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Which authors may be eligible?

Only corresponding authors already affiliated with the University of Bologna on the date the article is accepted are eligible, including academics with fixed-term contracts such as PhD students, research fellows, fixed-term assistant professorsspecialisation school students, etc.

In such cases, authors must submit their contributions via their institutional email address (i.e.: name.surname@unibo.it or name.surname@studio.unibo.it).

Which are the eligible journals?

Authors can publish in the hybrid journals subscribed by the institutions that signed the national agreement accessible on the Ovid platform. Therefore, authors may publish their articles also in journals that are not included in the collection subscribed by the University of Bologna, provided that those journals have been subscribed by at least one of the institutions that had signed the agreement.

The transformative agreement doesn’t cover the costs of publishing in full Open Access journals, which therefore are charged to the authors.

Here is a list [.xlsx 16 KB] of the eligible journals in 2023.

What happens if the annual national fund is exhausted?

The agreement covers the publishing costs up to the annual national fund available to all institutions that have signed the agreement.

Once the national fund is exhausted, the cost of any additional articles will be charged to the authors, with an increasing discount on the list price for the three-year period: 25% for 2021, 30% for 2022, 35% for 2023.

In case the annual fund is used only partially, the remaining part will not be cumulative with the next year's fund. It can still be employed, however, to convert articles that had been published under the traditional publishing model to Open Access.

Under which kind of licence will articles be published?

The standard licence is CC BYThe journals "A&A Practice" and "Journal of Urology" are the exceptions, publishing their articles under a CC BY-NC-ND licence.

Authors retain all rights relating to their articles, that can be deposited in the University of Bologna institutional repository (IRIS) and published on the authors’ personal websites. Open access is granted right after the publication without any embargo period.

When will the article be published Open Access?

The article will be published once the University of Bologna has verified the author’s affiliation with the University and has given its approval.

Which costs are excluded from the coverage of the agreement?
